I Love being a Teacher because..

Just entered Manila Bulletin's "I Love being a Teacher because.." essay contest. I don't know if I will win, but I had fun writing the essay. Been teaching for a while now. Still passionate about it. It's been a long struggle to teach English for the Deaf. There's still so much to do. Anyhow, here's the essay that I sent. Requirements were to write not more then 1000 words but I think I may have not gotten very far. I wrote a 400+ word essay. They might think it's a short one. Oh well. At least I tried :)

I Love being a Teacher because....

Everyone in this world was motivated in some way by a Teacher.  I want to be that kind of person. Someone who motivates, molds, inspires. I want to be the kind of Teacher who someday someone would say “She was the Teacher who made me what I am today.”

Being a Teacher is the most creative job in the world. Builders build bridges. Musicians make music. Architects design houses. Fashion designers create something out of nothing.  Every one of them was taught by a Teacher who ignited in them the creativity that they have brought to their profession.  The Teachers who taught them are content to sit back and watch them grow.

Being a Teacher requires passion and is means of giving back. Almost all the writers I’ve read about are Teachers. Dr. Jose Dalisay, a famous Filipino writer, is also a College Professor like me. He has passion, drive, force. He could have chosen to become just a novelist, a writer, but no, he is giving back and sharing what he knows to mold young minds into writers like him. That is passion. That is giving back. That is paying it forward.

Being a Teacher actually means that education is a lifelong process. Actors relax at home after grueling hours in front of the camera and the media. Businessmen have the option to arrive home and unwind after a long day… but not Teachers. We constantly look for new ways to improve our craft. We are constantly learning. We have to learn not only our craft but also be kept up-to-date on the latest news, the latest trends, even the latest movies that are out on theatres. We have to keep up with the slang words that young people use today so that we know what they’re talking about.  We have to appear as knowledgeable, cultured individuals in society.

Being a Teacher raises awareness and molds ordinary people into leaders of the world. I didn’t write this essay to win. I wrote it because I want people to be aware that there are Deaf teachers like me. I was once a student. I too, was molded by Teachers who have inspired me to raise awareness and become a role model, a person who can motivate other Deaf people like me to say “If she can do it, so can I.”
